Spartan of the week: Mike Metzger

August 31, 2007 by admin

After multiple, long and arduous training regimens, Mike Metzger has been officially recognized as Athlon Elite’s Spartan of the week. He has survived the Edge Program, conquered the Growth Program, and continues to amaze us with everything (but his ability to catch a Frisbee). This week, he posted a facility record 14:43 for “The Wiper” workout, and then posted a respectable 28:48 for the “Get a Grip 270″, after which he immediately proceeded to the field for Athlon Elite sanctioned Frisbee. Great work Mike, welcome to the Spartan Club.

Survival Tip of the Week: Water Storage and Purification

August 29, 2007 by admin

This may seem a bit far fetched, but with all the talk in the media about nuclear and biological terrorism.. we might as well talk about the unthinkable. What happens when there is a disaster, and water no longer comes pouring out of your sink at home? Remember, you can live a month without food, but lack of water will kill you in a matter of hours. Check out this link for some good info on water.

Exercise of the Week: Floor Wiper

August 28, 2007 by admin

This dynamic exercise is flat out awesome! This movement incorporates almost every aspect of core strength. It builds strength in the abdominals, hip flexors, and obliques. It also trains the body to be more flexible, and be more balanced. Try this at your gym and impress your friends, or come do them weekly with us at Athlon Elite. You won’t see trainers elsewhere adding this exercise to their client’s workout!

Nutrition Tip of the Week: Quackery

August 27, 2007 by admin

“Quackery” derives from the word quacksalver (someone who boasts about his salves). Dictionaries define quack as “a pretender to medical skill; a charlatan” and “one who talks pretentiously without sound knowledge of the subject discussed.” These definitions suggest that the promotion of quackery involves deliberate deception, but many promoters sincerely believe in what they are doing. The FDA defines health fraud as “the promotion, for profit, of a medical remedy known to be false or unproven.” This also can cause confusion because in ordinary usage — and in the courts — the word “fraud” connotes deliberate deception. Quackery’s paramount characteristic is promotion (”Quacks quack!”) rather than fraud, greed, or misinformation. - Stephen Barrett, MD (Quackwatch.org)

This is a very important word and definition to keep in mind whenever listening to Nutrition advice. We live in a world that allows bogus mis-information about diet to be constantly advertised to us by people with absolutely no interest in our health. With that said, here are the top 5 tips to avoiding B.S.

1) Did your diet advice come from a Nutritionist with real credentials? These would include RD, MS, and MD. Any other credentials claiming “nutrition expert” simply mean they passed an online test that requires no prior experience or education to take.

2) Does your new diet promise “quick results.” This is a big sign of BS. There are no quick fixes, only lifestyle choices that make us healthier.

3) Does your new supplement have any of the following words: Ripped, Extreme, Mass, Huge, Burner, Blocker, Guaranteed, Quick, Fast, etc. I think you get my point. While some of these products may help some people, in general they will do nothing for your health. Don’t gamble with your health.

4) Does your new diet or supplement come from an exotic herb, plant, root, fruit, or extract from a remote country? I know you’ve seen these things. Trust me… even if these Sherpas in Nepal are using this stuff, it doesn’t come in a little pill. Achem’s razor tells me that Sherpas are good at climbing because they’ve been doing it for thousands of years. Its called genetics.

5) If you’re not getting the answers you deserve, then ask better questions. The deeper you dig, the harder it is for people to B.S. That’s why peer reviewed science is so important. Scientists ask the hard questions, then present them to the world to be criticized. It is the only true way to explore our world. They are not always right, but they don’t have secrets. That’s the important lesson.

Sorry to Burst your bubble on a Monday morning, but we don’t B.S at Athlon Elite. We provide real solutions for real people. If you have any questions, comments or concerns. Please ask!

This man is one of our original clients. He is a tremendous success story for the Growth program. After only a small amount of time, Steve has gained 9 pounds of Lean Body weight! He has also shed 4 pounds of fat weight, which is difficult to do at the same time. His dedication to his program, and his discipline in his life has earned him this honor. Athlon Elite is extremely proud of Steve, and will continue to push his limits to attain his goals. Steve is your Spartan today… which of you will be next week’s?

Survival Tip of the Week: Positive Attitude

August 22, 2007 by admin

Positive Mental Attitude

“Survival is a state of mind. Control your fears and avoid panic. Decide to live. Analyze your situation and plan a course of action only after considering all of the aspects of your predicament and keeping in mind your safety at all times. Don’t make any quick judgments.”

With the increase of hiking and skiing accidents in the news, this is good information to keep in your mind. By placing yourself in the wild, you are placing yourself in harm’s way. Always expect the worst, and plan accordingly. The simple things are the easiest to forget, and the most likely to kill you when ignored.

This is a great link to some good info on keeping a positive attitude during a rough outing. Read it, Live it, Love it.
