This may seem trivial compared to natural disasters and skin cancer, however it is a killer for those of us on a strict exercise and diet prescription. Almost all of us have had the “weekend that killed our diet.” It’s inevitable that social excursions will interrupt a carefully planned and executed lifestyle. However, like I mentioned earlier this week, it’s all about moderation. The best mindset comes from the idea that social interaction is just as healthy as running 5 miles. Turning down a beer with a friend because it’s “not on your diet” is not necessarily healthy. It basically comes down to your happiness. If a beer with a friend is truly stressful, then avoid it. Remember, healthy living includes all aspects of our lives, and is never a snapshot. It is a rolling film, that is quantified over time. Making 1 “bad” decision should never overshadow the efforts of 10 good decisions (unless that decision lands you in jail, or the hospital.) Here are a couple tips to surviving the weekend. Enjoy!
1) Instead of eating out, have friends over for a BBQ. This is better for your wallet, and you can control the ingredients.
2) Stick to red wine, or real craft beer. Have a piece of mind that real beer is rich in whole grains, and vitamins. (Anything made by Bud, Coors, Miller, or Mexican does not apply here)
3) Set up limits. I should not have to explain that more. Remember, the only thing worse then drinking too much, is missing your saturday workout because of a hangover.
4) Drink water. A lot of water.
5) Avoid late night runs for Pizza and Burritos like the plague.
