The box squat is one of our most widely used exercise in the sports training world. Many athletes, especially adolescent, have difficulty performing a proper squat. Poor squat form usually stems from weak glute activation and poor hip flexibility. These dangerous problems hinder the body, and cause what we commonly refer to as “quad dominant” movement. Quad dominance places increased stress on the knee, and puts the entire lower body into a vulnerable position. Recent research suggests that quad dominance can be blamed for many commonly devastating injuries such as the dreaded ACL tear. Increasing glute and hip strength also has its performance benefits. It allows an athlete to change direction more fluidly, and explode from a lower position. We use the box squat to encourage the body to rely more heavily on the glutes and hips, and it also teaches the athlete proper squating technique.
