Nutrition Tip of the Week: You must be Nuts!
Nuts are an amazing food. I could stop here with that comment alone, but I assume you want to know why. Very simply, nuts are high in good carbs, good fats, good protein, and good fiber. They are calorie dense foods that are equally fantastic on the backpacking trip, as they are in the office. They are also equally at home in a diet for weight loss or weight gain. The good fats and fiber are fantastic for digestion and intenstinal health, while the protein can be a vital asset to the vegetarian diet. For weight loss, they are incredible for satiation and curbing your appetite. For weight gain, they are excellent source of calories that can be added to a smoothie or protein shake. Nut butters are also a great option, but obviously much higher in fat calories. Use these often, but in moderation. There is too much of a good thing in this case. The best nuts for health are listed in order below:
1) Almonds
2) Walnuts
3) Cashews
4) Peanuts
5) Other Nuts are all good for you. Be careful with Macadamia nuts, as the high fat turns them into a diuretic. Trust me, I know.
Another great food that fits into this category are seeds. Sunflower seeds, Flax seeds, and Pumpkin seeds are especially good for you. They are rich in good fats, and vitamin E.
