Just back from a trip out to the great state of Wisconsin to meet with some colleagues. Milwaukee is a great city with some incredible sites, but the upper 30’s low 40’s will keep me coming back West!
When you travel it is fascinating and sometimes very sad to observe others. So many times while dashing about various airports (saw LAX, ORD, MKE, SBP, SFO and DEN. Liked Denver best by far) you see how much trouble some people have gotten themselves into through making bad choices. Way too many people who just can’t get around without what we would call in the hospital environment a Stand By Assist (SBA). While it is never possible to understand all the variables that lead to a persons functional condition without a lengthy evaluation, it seems apparent in far too many cases that people have just not moved much while a the same time making poor dietary and related lifestyle choices. People panting up short flights of stairs, unable to lift suitcases to overhead bins, requiring 4-5 wheelchairs at each gate, electric carts toting entire hypokinetic families around (maybe they are all in a rush to make a connection).
The lifestyle choices you make today have a large influence on your immediate and distant future!

Let’s start off this brand new week with a reminder tht the choices you make each day DO have a significant impact on your overall health.
Thinking back to past posts on gene expression and how we might be able to influence our overall health via the choices we make.
Each of us is given a set of human DNA that looks a lot like a giant recipe. You can influence this set of genes via a variety of inputs. One input is human movement. If you are reading this you get it. Athlon Elite is your committment to human movement.
What about the other inputs: diet, environmental toxins, stress, sleep, vitamin and mineral balance, hydration?
Each of these plays on overall role in your health. Make small changes and good choices each time you are confronted with a decision.
Decision #1 this week: Scheduling your 3-5 Athlon Elite sessions.
Danny has consistently pushed the limits in here over the last three weeks taking himself to the point of physical exhaustion, mental breakdown and extreme nauseau. Then, walks in the next day ready to give 110% once again… no whining, no complaining, no negativity whatsoever. Great work Danny, that’s a Spartan Warrior! You’re well on your way to your goals!
There continues to be a great debate amongst various scientists as to what causes obesity and why it is so variable amongst cultures. While the simple energy in energy out equation seems appropriate, more and more data are pointing out that it really is more complicated than a simple in and out calorie equation.
Gary Taube has written a popular book that has riled up the entire scientific community. Much of what he notes stems from statements like this from the mid 1820’s:
"It’s fascinating. For 150 years since Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin in 1825 writes The Physiology of Taste and says, "I know what cause obesity. Just talk to fat people. They eat too much starches and sugars." He says this. "I have 500 conversations over the year with stout people, and each one, they’re telling me, ‘I love the potatoes. I love the rice. I love the bread.’" Since then, it’s sort of been institutionalized that carbohydrates — starches and sugars — make you fat."
Add to the above the significant amount of high fructose corn syrup in the average American diet and the argument is compelling.
As a member of the local group HEAL-SLO (Healthy Eating Active Living) I am open to the various thoughts and ideas that are currently being thrown around as it relates to a "healthier" community. One of the more interesting concepts is pushing for local restaurants to "publish" calorie counts for the various items on their menu.
So, what do you think? Would you be any more or less likely to order an item if you knew the calorie count?
So now in addition to all of the other health benefits, it seems to be that exercise also helps you maintain your mental edge. Researchers at Mayo have found that exercise offers a benefit from mild cognitive impairment!
