Who is Athlon and why should you even consider listening to us?
That’s important, right?! Here’s the scoop:
Athlon was originally created to fulfill the need for an “elite” level fitness and sports performance facility for athletes in San Luis Obispo and it’s neighboring cities. A place where high level fitness and performance enthusiasts could trust they we’re getting the most up to date, scientifically-proven training strategies. We assembled a team of exercise physiologists, physical therapists, nutritionists and athletic trainers to ensure the methods being researched and applied were high quality and multidisciplinary.
The approach worked and Athlon quickly became known for turning out high level athletes who not only performed at the top of their sport but who also seemed to be very resistant to injury. However, it quickly became apparent that not only athletes benefited from Athlon’s unique system but EVERYONE looking for a physical change, whether it be greater performance, better health, or losing some body fat, would greatly benefit from the unique systems that had been developed.
We realized right away that EVERYONE IS AN ATHLETE…
Maybe not everyone is trying to make the Olympics, (like some of Athlon’s clients), but everyone generally wants to perform well throughout their day, feel good and have energy leftover after. And of course, EVERYONE likes having the lean, toned and fit body of an athlete… So we began training EVERYONE! Home-maker athletes, construction worker athletes, “key-board” athletes, older-adult athletes, desk-jockey athletes, EVERYONE.
Most people want to change their body, fitness and energy levels, health and vitality and overall well being. The science and techniques behind athletic development CAN be applied to anyone at the right intensity level with the right coaching and they’ll see tremendous improvement in not only the way they perform but in the way they look and feel.
Don’t believe that? Think athletic conditioning isn’t right for you? Just look at our Testimonials Page and the many “athletes” we’ve trained from all walks of life.
We take immense pride in the education and experience of our staff and their ability to help our members and clients. You won’t find a more knowledgeable, passionate, driven, ELITE team of fitness professionals on the central coast… starting with the owner/founder, Ryan Joiner:
Ryan is openly endorsed as the “go to fitness expert” in San Luis Obispo County. He has been sought after to present his innovative fitness, wellness and rehabilitation topics to many large organizations in San Luis County, like PG&E, Morris & Garritano, The Family Care Network, French Hospital, Cal Trans, The Department of Social Services, Exchange Club, Rotary Club and Kiwana’s just to name a few.
Ryan’s client list reads like a “Who’s-Who” list of leading local as well as professional athletes, leading business professionals, and good ol’ “regular Joe’s” (like he claims to be himself). And since launching Athlon in 2003 one could easily say that Ryan’s fitness and performance services and advice has improved the lives of literally thousands of San Luis County residents as well as other out-of-state (and out-of-country) residents that regularly seek out his informative reports that are offered for FREE on this website.
Ryan started Athlon because it was the obvious progression of his passion. A black-belt in Shotokan Karate, he competed as a kickboxer achieving a ranking of #3 in North America by the International Kickboxing Federation. He’s always loved competing and maintaining optimum fitness levels and loves helping others achieve their “elite” self too.
Ryan was raised on a farm here in California where the hard physical labor made him strong and athletic, and the typically long, farmer-life days developed his “hard-headed” work ethic. He is a “never-say-die” kind of person and you’ll often find him working hard here at Athlon (either in the facility with a client or construction project, or in his office researching new fitness programs).
After high school he attended Cuesta College and got his AA and AS in general studies, then went to Fresno State for his Bachelors in exercise physiology. After that he came back to SLO and obtained a Master’s degree from Cal Poly in Kinesiology with an emphasis in biomechanics and motor behavior. Ryan maintains the four highest fitness certifications in the industry: Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist from the National Strength and Conditioning Association, Certified Health Fitness Specialist from the American College of Sports Medicine, Movement Integration and Performance Specialist from Z-Health Performance Solutions, and Club Coach Olympic lifting certification from USA Weightlifting.
Ryan endeavors to be an innovator in the fitness industry and more importantly make a significant impact on the fitness and performance, and thus lives, of our local San Luis Obispo County residents. Bottom line: he’s helped thousands of people improve their lives through achieving their own “elite” fitness – and he can help you too.

Angela Martin, BS, ACSM-CPT
California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, CA 2011
Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology, Minor in Sports Nutrition
American College of Sports Medicine
Certified Personal Trainer
Angela grew up loving the sun and the sand in Ventura County, CA. Her interest in an active lifestyle began at an early age when, due to excess energy as a child, she was enrolled in gymnastics and progressed through the competitive levels for nine years. It was after this sport career (and the injuries that came with it) that she became interested in the world of personal training, athletic training and physical therapy and found her way into Cal Poly.
She thrived in the Kinesiology program and truly developed a love for all things exercise and movement related. She concurrently did internships in both the strength and conditioning room for Cal Poly athletics and here at Athlon Elite. Guess which one she liked best… She graduated with her bachelors in Kinesiology and a minor in Sports Nutrition in 2011 and quickly began moving up the ranks here at Athlon, eventually becoming an ACSM Certified Personal Trainer and a Senior Trainer here at Athlon.
Angela is the “jack of all trades” here at Athlon. On any given day you’ll see her training clients, answering phones, and giving sales tours! She loves creating new and exciting ways to make exercise fun, and likes to think of her enthusiasm for fitness as contagious. She is incredibly curious of peoples’ likes and dislikes inside and outside of the gym and strives to be friendly and approachable. So if you spot her in the gym, feel free to seek her out for any sort of exercise advice, nutritional counseling or just a good old fashion chit chat!

His athletic career in both sports continued at Cal Poly, where he earned his Bachelors degree in Biology. He also finished as a school record holder in both the shot put and the discus, earning All-American status in the shot put at the NCAA Championships in 1999.
After graduating from Cal Poly in 2000, Andy’s passion for sports and helping others led him to a career in personal training in Beverly Hills, where he worked with some of the best trainers in Los Angeles. Abby Hollister, BS, ACSM-CPT
The College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, VA 2015
Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and Healthy Science, Minor in Management and Organizational Leadership
American College of Sports MedicineCertified Personal Trainer
Abby grew up in San Luis Obispo and fell in love with all the beaches and hiking trails the central coast has to offer. In addition to her love for outdoor activities, she found her niche in sports- swimming competitively from the age of 8 and playing water polo for San Luis Obispo High School. Playing sports and participating in Avila Beach Junior Lifeguards spurred a passion for fitness and wellness and a desire to make it a central aspect of her life. She decided to study Kinesiology and Health Sciences at the College of William and Mary in Virginia and also became a Group Fitness Instructor and Personal Trainer at the college rec center. While she loved the Fall colors, three years on the East Coast was enough to convince her that the West Coast was where she felt most at home, so she moved back after graduation and was lucky enough to find a job with the amazing team at Athlon.
Athlon feels like home to her, as she had come to Elite Classes with her dad in high school and when she came home for holiday breaks from college. She loves the Athlon community and looks forward to seeing her clients and friends at work each and every day! When Abby is not at Athlon, you can find her hiking, at the beach, or teaching and taking spin classes at Cycle Tribe. Outside of fitness, she also loves music, movies, and cooking-she finds inspiration from the Food Network and loves experimenting with healthy recipes.
