The controversial bill that Congress just passed is disappointing in many ways (to me).  I hate to see people not get the help they need. However, the health care (Medicaid) debate that took place overlooked an important truth: what we call “health care” is actually “sick care.”

We must remember that the path to health does not hinge on political decisions. Real health comes from the choices we make every day. We don’t need insurance to be healthy—we need a lifestyle that supports HEALTH.

Yes, sick care is necessary when in a state of severe disease.  However, the reality is that many health issues, such as heart disease, diabetes, and obesity, are preventable through the basic principles of healthy living: exercise, nutritious food, good sleep, stress management, and a positive mindset, (e.g., the cartoon above).

Yet, these get left out of the political conversation, overshadowed by fear tactics and the idea that we can’t be healthy without the “right” coverage.

The fact is, we need both: “healthcare” for when we’re severely sick, and self-care that keeps us healthy!

Insurance is essential, but it can’t create health. We’d have a lot more money for insurance if we didn’t overburden the system with such poor national health.

The True Cost of Inactivity

Chronic diseases are a major drain on the U.S. healthcare system, and many are preventable with lifestyle changes:

  • Diabetes: $413 billion in medical costs and lost productivity annually.
  • Obesity: $173 billion per year.
  • Heart Disease & Stroke: $254 billion in healthcare costs, plus $168 billion in lost productivity.

These are just a few of the top conditions that drive up healthcare costs, but they can be improved—or even prevented—through the simple lifestyle choices highlighted in the cartoon.

Yet, despite decades of guidance from health professionals, our society continues to struggle with making these changes. If we just embraced 50% of these healthy habits, we could drastically reduce healthcare costs and have tons of money left over for whatever programs we wanted!

The challenge? Changing ingrained habits. We all know what we should do, but making it happen is the hard part.

The Athlon Solution:
Building Health Through the 5 Pillars:
“Structure and Purpose—Not Guesswork!”

At Athlon, we understand that lasting health doesn’t come from health insurance. And we also know that health is not just about “big-muscle-gym-culture” either. That’s why we’ve designed our approach around a comprehensive, 5 Pillars strategy:  Health & Lifestyle, Move Well, See Well, Balance Well, and Breathe Well.

These pillars are the foundation of a healthier, more resilient body. Each one plays a vital role in supporting your overall well-being and longevity.

  • Health & Lifestyle: Supporting your daily habits through proper nutrition, stress management, and restorative sleep.
  • Move Well: Focusing on functional movement patterns, strength, and flexibility to optimize how your body moves.
  • See Well: Enhancing the most prioritized sense: Vision.  Training this system not only improves eyesight, it leads to healthier, pain-free movement and core strength.
  • Balance Well: Improving ‘inner ear’ function and how it coordinates with your spine and eyes optimizes balance, reduces injury risk, and greatly improves posture.
  • Breathe Well: Practicing proper breathing mechanics to reduce stress and improve oxygen flow for better performance and recovery.

With the right coaching and accountability from a dedicated team of professionals, you can get the daily guidance needed to implement these pillars, and make lasting changes in your life (and our nation’s pocketbook)!
